Getting a Mexico Driver’s License

Let me start by saying this. I know this topic has been covered on different Facebook pages, and the city posts a graphic every once in a while, especially when they are offering a discount. But, it seems that someone (including myself) is always asking what needs to be done to obtain their driver’s license on the island. So here we go.

First, it is not mandatory to have a Mexico license, provided you have a valid license from your country of origin. However, it isn’t a bad idea to have it. This is what you need to do, assuming you are at least 18 years old (I’m guessing you are).

Go to the Police Station next to the Palacio Municipal at the corner of Avenida Rafael E Melgar and Calle 11. When you enter from the park, turn left and go to the last office at the end of the hall. They are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

What to take with you in a folder:

  • Residente Permanente/Residente Temporal (original & copy)
  • Passport (original & copy)
  • CURP (original & copy)
  • Results of a blood test indicating your blood type
  • Proof of address (a utility bill)
  • 2 infantil photos (color or black & white)

Your initial license is good for 2 years and is renewable after that. At renewal, you will need to take your original license, passport, and proof of address.

Depending upon the day and the employee at the office, you may or may not have to take a written test. I’ve spoken with people who did, and others who didn’t. Also, I’ve never heard anyone talk of an on-the-road driving test despite reading online about them being required in other parts of Mexico. Ah, the uncertainty and unpredictability of living on an island in Mexico!

Lastly, the most recent information I have found indicates that the cost for the license is $337 MXN for cars and $190 for motos.

So there you have it! No more hunting for the information when you are ready to proceed. If you have further questions, you can call the office at 987-872-9800 ext. 3200.
