Great Food – Low Price!

One of the great things about living on our little rock is that you don’t have to look far for great food! I honestly believe that if you set out to eat at every single place on the island, it would take you at least a year! The cuisine that is to be found caters to every taste and every price range. I happen to love the “street food,” but this is a subject for another post.

In this post, I want to talk about those wonderful little gems that only the residents or really frequent visitors happen to know about. I’m talking about the loncherias and the places that serve a comida corrida. SUCH amazing food is found in these places, and the prices are shockingly low!

Loncherias are in great abundance. These are often connected to the owner’s home or in a small local. I have found that some are open for lunch and dinner, while others are only open for dinner. You can easily eat for less than $5 USD! Check them out when you are out and about for their hours. Better yet, post them in the comments along with your review! Typical fare includes tortas, panuchos, salbutes, etc. These are the ones I have found either online or in my wanderings.

  • Santa Maria Loncheria – Av Rosado Salas, between 20 & 25, SW corner of the Mercado
  • Loncheria Doña Chary – Calle 12, between 80 & 85 Bis
  • Addy’s – NW corner of Av 25 & 5, located in the nursery
  • La Isla – corner of Av 20 & 5
  • Loncheria Las Palmas – corner of Av 25 & 3
  • Loncheria Mary – SE corner of Av 90 & 3

Another favorite among locals is the establishments that serve the comida corrida (literally “food on the run”). Now, the name would imply that these restrict you to take-out. However, that is certainly not the case. You might be asked if you want it to go, though. I generally ask for the comida del dia (same thing). Anyway, these meals are incredible as they are prepared with fresh ingredients. This means that the menu changes daily based on what is available in the market! Generally served from 1:00 to 4:00, the meal consists of soup or salad, rice or pasta, your choice from 3-6 main dishes, dessert, a beverage (water, jamaica, tea), and maybe tortillas and salsa. It’s a huge meal! Cost is generally $5 to $7 USD! Here’s a list to start with. Again, please do add to it in the comments!

  • La Choza – Av 10, between 3 & Salas
  • Sabores – Av 5, between 3 & 5
  • Chilango’s – Av 10, between 13 & 15
  • Cucina Italiano – Calle 6, between 15 & 10
  • Las Flamitas – Av 25, between 3 & 5
  • Miss Dollar – Av 25, between Salas & 3
  • La Herradura – Av 30. between 17 & 19
  • La Cuisine (great health food) – Calle 11, between 5 & 10 (next to Ego Gym)
  • Casa Mission – Av 55, between Juarez & 1
  • Parrilla Mission – Calle 1, between 50 & 55
  • La Mission – Rosado Salas, between Melgar & 5

Happy eating and please do share!!!!!

  2. Ah, great on Bindya continuing comida del día! Don’t forget La Candela’s comida del día. Av 5 and Calle 6. That’s where I discovered these great deals. 🙂
I also like Doña Dilla on 11 beside Mega. Big quesadillas and bottled agua frescas $18 pesos each, last time I was in. Delicious lunch for $2-3. 🙂

  3. UPDATE: I spoke with a friend of mine yesterday who had been to Bindiya over the weekend. She specifically asked, and was told that they no longer serve the traditional corrida comida; lunch and dinner only.
